Saturday, Oct. 6th, 2007 Dyslexia Advocates of Wylie (formerly PIRATES-Dyslexia) presents…. “Celebration of the Arts” – guest Eric McGehearty, nationally recognized sculptor
Eric McGehearty will inspire us with how he overcame is struggle with words through art. An Art Gallery will be displaying art pieces created by Wylie’s Alpha Phonics students. Each student will receive an award for their unique art submission. If reserved lunch will be $5.00 each, otherwise it is $8.00 at the event. To reserve boxed lunch click here. Tuesday, Sept. 25th, 2007 Library Grant Presentation. Last spring, the Library wrote a grant asking for $20,000 for materials for dyslexic students, which they were approved for. Saturday, Oct. 25th, 2008 Dyslexia Advocates of Wylie Meeting We are having a sporting theme this year, so we are thrilled to have as our key note speaker a former Alpha Phonic student and Wylie High School graduate. Jeff Nutt graduated from Wylie High School in 2003 playing baseball all 4 years of high school as a catcher. He has gone on to play college baseball with Navarro College in Corsicana on a full scholarship graduating with an Associates degree in General Studies. Then he went on to play with The University of Arkansas Razorbacks catching and has a DH; receiving a scholarship to graduating with Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology in 2008. In the 2008 draft he signed with the New York Yankees playing in their Class A Minor League with the Charleston Riverdogs. He is going to be an inspiration to our kids as he explains what it has been like for him to grow up with dyslexia and work to achieve his personal goals. He will be wearing his University of Arkansas baseball uniform, so there will be a time for photos and autographs from Jeff. Please bring an item to be autographed like baseballs, bats, gloves, University of Arkansas or New York Yankee memorabilia or anything you’d like. We are also offering sporting games for the kids to play like a soccer kick, football punt, baseball/softball batting, etc. For you parents we will again have informational vendors in attendance to inform and educate you. The vendors will be Texas Scottish Rite, The Learning Patch, Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, Barnes and Noble and The Handwriting Clinic.
